Significant figures (sig figs) are the meaningful digits in a measurement that carry actual precision. They tell you how precisely a value was measured or calculated. The rules are used in chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering to avoid overstating precision.

Rules for Counting Significant Figures

  • All non-zero digits are significant. (1234 → 4 sig figs)
  • Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. (1004 → 4 sig figs)
  • Leading zeros are NOT significant. (0.0045 → 2 sig figs)
  • Trailing zeros after a decimal ARE significant. (3.500 → 4 sig figs)
