Bigha Size by State (Reference Table)
A bigha is a traditional unit, not a fixed metric one, so its size depends on the state and sometimes on the district or even the village. The table below lists the sizes most commonly used in land records and by revenue offices. One hectare is 10,000 square metres, which is about 107,639 square feet.
| State / Region | 1 bigha (approx.) | 1 hectare in bigha |
|---|---|---|
| Assam | 14,400 sq ft (about 1,338 m²) | about 7.47 |
| West Bengal | 14,400 sq ft (20 katha) | about 7.47 |
| Tripura | 14,400 sq ft | about 7.47 |
| Bihar / Jharkhand | about 27,220 sq ft (about 2,529 m²) | about 3.95 |
| Uttar Pradesh (pucca bigha) | about 27,000 sq ft (about 2,508 m²) | about 3.99 |
| Rajasthan (pucca bigha) | 27,225 sq ft (3,025 sq yd) | about 3.95 |
| Rajasthan (kachha bigha) | 17,424 sq ft (1,936 sq yd) | about 6.18 |
| Gujarat | 17,424 sq ft (0.4 acre) | about 6.18 |
| Himachal Pradesh | 8,712 sq ft (0.2 acre) | about 12.36 |
Important: these are widely used values, not legal definitions. In Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan the bigha used in daily dealings can differ between districts, and a “kachha” (local) bigha is often a fraction of the “pucca” one. Before buying, selling or dividing land, confirm the local bigha size with the patwari, tehsil or the state land records (Bhulekh) portal.
How to Work Out the Factor for Your Area
If you know the size of one bigha in your village in square feet, you can get an exact factor yourself:
Bigha per hectare = 107,639 / (square feet in one local bigha)
For example, if your local bigha is 20,000 sq ft, then 1 hectare = 107,639 / 20,000 = 5.38 bigha. If your bigha is given in square yards, multiply by 9 first to get square feet. If it is given in square metres, use 10,000 / (square metres in one bigha).
Worked Examples by State
Example 1, Assam: a tea garden plot of 2.5 hectares. Bigha = 2.5 x 7.47 = about 18.7 bigha.
Example 2, Bihar: a farmer’s record shows 0.8 hectare. Bigha = 0.8 x 3.95 = about 3.16 bigha.
Example 3, Gujarat: 4 hectares of farmland. Bigha = 4 x 6.18 = about 24.7 bigha.
Example 4, reverse conversion (bigha to hectare): 12 bigha in Uttar Pradesh. Hectare = 12 / 3.99 = about 3.01 hectares. To go from bigha to hectare, always divide by the factor instead of multiplying.
Smaller Units: Biswa, Katha and Dhur
A bigha is divided into smaller local units, and these also change by region:
- Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan: 1 bigha = 20 biswa, and 1 biswa = 20 biswansi (in Bihar the smaller unit is often called dhur).
- Assam: 1 bigha = 5 katha, and 1 katha = 20 lessa. One katha is about 2,880 sq ft.
- West Bengal: 1 bigha = 20 katha, and 1 katha = 720 sq ft (16 chatak).
So in West Bengal, 1 hectare = about 7.47 bigha = about 149.5 katha. Knowing the sub-units helps when a land record lists an area such as “3 bigha 7 katha”.
Hectare, Acre and Bigha Compared
| Unit | Square metres | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hectare | 10,000 | 107,639 |
| 1 acre | 4,047 | 43,560 |
| 1 bigha (UP / Bihar) | about 2,500 | about 27,000 |
| 1 bigha (Assam / West Bengal) | about 1,338 | 14,400 |
One hectare equals about 2.471 acres. For acres, use the hectares to acres calculator. To measure a house plot or room in square feet, try the square footage calculator, and to work out a share of land between family members, the percentage calculator helps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bigha is 1 hectare?
One hectare equals approximately 3.95 bigha in most northern Indian states, but in Assam and West Bengal it is closer to 7.48 bigha – select your state in the calculator above for the correct figure.
Why is 1 hectare worth almost double the bigha in Assam compared to Uttar Pradesh?
Bigha is not a standardized metric unit – its physical size differs by state and even by district in India. A bigha in Assam or West Bengal is roughly half the physical size of a bigha in UP, Bihar, or Rajasthan, so it takes more of them to fill the same hectare.
How do you convert hectares to bigha for your specific state?
Multiply your hectare value by your state’s specific conversion factor (see the table above). Our calculator does this automatically once you select your state from the dropdown.
What if I don’t know which bigha standard my state uses?
Use the General/Average option (3.953) for a quick estimate, then confirm the exact local figure with your district’s land revenue office before relying on it for an official transaction.
