What is a Hectare?

A hectare (ha) is a metric unit of area equal to 10,000 square metres (100m × 100m). It is the standard unit for measuring farmland and forest area internationally, used in India, Europe, Australia, and most countries outside the US.

What is an Acre?

An acre is an imperial unit of area equal to 4,047 square metres or 43,560 square feet. It is widely used in the USA, UK, and in Indian real estate (especially for agricultural land).

How to Convert Hectares to Acres

One hectare equals 2.4710538 acres. For everyday land dealings, multiplying by 2.471 is precise enough, and multiplying by 2.5 gets you within 1.2 percent for a quick mental estimate.

Hectares to acres: multiply by 2.471
Acres to hectares: multiply by 0.4047, or divide by 2.471

Worked examples

  • 3 hectares to acres: 3 x 2.471 = 7.41 acres
  • 0.5 hectares to acres: 0.5 x 2.471 = 1.24 acres
  • 10 acres to hectares: 10 x 0.4047 = 4.05 hectares
  • 100 acres to hectares: 100 x 0.4047 = 40.47 hectares

Both units describe area, so the conversion is a straight multiplication. There is no need to worry about the shape of the plot.

Where the Numbers Come From

The two units come from completely different traditions, which is why the conversion factor is an awkward number rather than something round.

  • A hectare is metric and deliberately tidy: 100 m x 100 m, which is 10,000 square metres. The name combines "hect" (hundred) with "are", an older metric unit of 100 square metres.
  • An acre is imperial and historical. It was originally the area a team of oxen could plough in one day, later standardised as one chain by one furlong, which works out to 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet.

Because one is defined in metres and the other in yards, the ratio between them was never going to be round.

Hectares and Acres in Other Land Units

If you are dealing with land in South Asia you will run into local units alongside hectares and acres. These vary by state, so treat regional figures as typical rather than legally exact.

UnitIn square metresIn acresIn hectares
1 hectare10,0002.4711
1 acre4,04710.4047

1 cent40.470.010.004
1 bigha (varies by state)1,500 to 2,5000.37 to 0.620.15 to 0.25

Bigha is the one to be careful with. It has no single national definition, and the same word can mean noticeably different areas in different states, so always confirm the local standard before relying on a figure.

Common Conversion Mistakes

  • Dividing when you should multiply. An acre is smaller than a hectare, so the acre figure is always the bigger number. If your answer got smaller going from hectares to acres, the operation was backwards.
  • Rounding 2.471 to 2. That is a 19 percent error. On a 40 hectare farm it misstates the area by nearly 19 acres.
  • Assuming bigha is standard. It is not, and a conversion that is right in one state can be badly wrong in the next.
  • Confusing area with distance. Doubling the length of a square plot does not double its area, it quadruples it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many acres are in 1 hectare?

One hectare equals 2.4710538 acres, which is normally rounded to 2.471 acres. For a quick mental estimate you can multiply by 2.5, which is within about 1.2 percent of the exact figure.

How many hectares are in 1 acre?

One acre equals 0.4047 hectares. You can either multiply the number of acres by 0.4047, or divide the number of acres by 2.471. Both give the same result.

What is 5 hectares in acres?

5 hectares equals 12.36 acres. The calculation is 5 x 2.471 = 12.355, which rounds to 12.36 acres.

Is 1 hectare bigger than 1 acre?

Yes. One hectare is about two and a half times larger than one acre. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, while an acre is 4,047 square metres.

How big is a hectare compared to a football pitch?

A hectare is slightly larger than a standard football pitch. A full-size pitch is typically around 7,000 to 9,000 square metres, and a hectare is 10,000 square metres, so one hectare is roughly one and a bit pitches.

Why is the conversion factor such an odd number?

Because the two units come from different measurement systems. A hectare is metric, defined as 100 m x 100 m. An acre is imperial, defined as 4,840 square yards. Since one is based on metres and the other on yards, the ratio between them was never going to be a round number.

How many square metres are in a hectare?

Exactly 10,000 square metres. A hectare is a square 100 metres on each side. That also means 100 hectares equals one square kilometre.
