IBU = Utilization × Alpha Acid (decimal) × Hop Weight (g) × 1000 ÷ Batch Volume (L)

Bigness Factor = 1.65 × 0.000125^(Gravity − 1)
Boil Time Factor = (1 − e^(−0.04 × minutes)) ÷ 4.15
Higher wort gravity reduces hop utilization (less bitterness extracted), and longer boil times increase utilization up to a practical ceiling around 60-90 minutes.
What Is IBU?
International Bitterness Units (IBU) measure the concentration of iso-alpha acids in beer, in parts per million. One IBU equals roughly 1 mg of iso-alpha acid per litre of beer. It’s an estimate, not a lab-exact number — real bitterness perception also depends on malt sweetness, carbonation and final gravity.

Tips for Accurate IBU Estimates
- Use fresh hops. Alpha acid degrades over storage time — old hops give less actual bitterness than the printed % suggests.
- Account for late additions separately. Hops added in the last 10-15 minutes contribute mostly aroma/flavor, not bitterness — calculate each addition’s boil time individually and sum the IBU contributions.
- Pellet hops utilize slightly better than whole leaf — some brewers add 10% to pellet hop IBU estimates.
- Use your boil gravity, not your final gravity — a concentrated boil (partial mash/extract brewers topping up post-boil) needs the gravity at boil time, not the diluted final volume gravity.

What does IBU mean in beer?
IBU stands for International Bitterness Units — a scale measuring the concentration of bittering compounds (iso-alpha acids) extracted from hops during the boil.
Can two beers have the same IBU but taste differently bitter?
Yes. Perceived bitterness also depends on malt sweetness and final gravity — a high-IBU beer with lots of residual sugar can taste less bitter than a lower-IBU beer that’s very dry.
Does boiling longer always increase IBU?
Utilization increases with boil time but levels off — most of the bitterness extraction happens in the first 60 minutes, with diminishing returns afterward.
What is a good IBU for a beginner homebrewer?
Pale ales and IPAs in the 30-50 IBU range are forgiving for beginners — bitterness mistakes are less noticeable than in a delicate lager.
Is the Tinseth formula 100% accurate?
No formula is exact — Tinseth, Rager and Garetz all give slightly different estimates. Tinseth is the most widely used by homebrew software (BeerSmith, Brewer’s Friend) and is a reliable planning estimate.
