Worked Example
Using the Boer formula, which is the most widely used for adults:
Women: LBM = (0.252 x weight in kg) + (0.473 x height in cm) – 48.3
For a man weighing 85 kg at 180 cm:
- 0.407 x 85 = 34.6
- 0.267 x 180 = 48.1
- 34.6 + 48.1 – 19.2 = 63.5 kg lean body mass
- Body fat mass: 85 – 63.5 = 21.5 kg, which is about 25 percent body fat
If you already know your body fat percentage from a measurement rather than a formula, the direct calculation is more accurate: LBM = weight x (1 – body fat percentage / 100).
Lean Body Mass Is Not Muscle Mass
These three terms are used interchangeably and mean different things:

So a 63.5 kg lean body mass does not mean 63.5 kg of muscle. Roughly half of it is bone, organs and water. This matters when you see claims about “gaining 5 kg of lean mass”, which usually includes a good deal of water and glycogen.
What Lean Body Mass Is Useful For
- A more accurate calorie target. The Katch-McArdle equation bases metabolic rate on lean mass rather than total weight: BMR = 370 + (21.6 x LBM in kg). For our 63.5 kg example that is 370 + 1,372 = 1,742 calories at rest.
- Protein targets. Setting protein from lean mass rather than total weight is more sensible for people carrying significant excess fat, since fat tissue does not drive protein needs.
- Tracking real progress. Scale weight alone cannot distinguish fat loss from muscle loss. A stable LBM during a diet is the sign that the deficit is working correctly.

Common Mistakes
- Treating LBM as muscle mass. Only about half of lean mass is trainable skeletal muscle.
- Comparing numbers across methods. A calliper reading and a smart scale reading are not comparable. Pick one method and stay with it.
- Weighing under different conditions. Impedance scales in particular are strongly affected by hydration, recent meals and exercise. Measure first thing in the morning, before eating.
- Expecting fast gains. A realistic rate of muscle gain is roughly 0.25 to 0.5 kg per month for a trained lifter, and faster only for beginners.
