Most people apply the wrong SPF for their skin type and sun exposure — either over-protecting with SPF 100 on a cloudy day or under-protecting with SPF 15 at the beach. Our free SPF Calculator recommends the right sunscreen SPF based on your skin type, the UV index, and your planned time outdoors.

What Does SPF Mean?
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how long a sunscreen extends your skin’s natural sun protection. If your unprotected skin starts to redden in 10 minutes, SPF 30 theoretically gives you 300 minutes of protection. However, real-world protection is lower due to sweating, water, and incomplete application.
SPF Comparison – How Much UV Is Blocked?
| SPF | UVB Blocked | UVB That Gets Through | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPF 15 | 93% | 7% | Indoor workers, brief outings |
| SPF 30 | 97% | 3% | Daily use, most activities |
| SPF 50 | 98% | 2% | Beach, pool, fair skin |
| SPF 100 | 99% | 1% | Type I/II skin, extreme UV |
Fitzpatrick Skin Type Guide
- Type I: Ivory/pale white — always burns, never tans (common in Ireland, Scotland)
- Type II: Fair — usually burns, tans with difficulty (common in Northern Europe)
- Type III: Medium — sometimes burns mildly, tans uniformly (common in Southern Europe)
- Type IV: Olive — rarely burns, tans easily (Mediterranean, Latin American)
- Type V: Brown — very rarely burns, tans darkly (South Asian, Middle Eastern)
- Type VI: Dark brown/black — almost never burns (West African, Australian Aboriginal)
Sunscreen Application Tips
- Amount matters: Most people apply 25–50% of the recommended amount, effectively halving their SPF
- Apply before going out: Chemical sunscreens need 15–20 minutes to activate; mineral sunscreens work immediately
- Don’t forget ears, back of neck, tops of feet, and lips (SPF lip balm)
- Reapply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming, sweating, or toweling off
- Cloudy days still need sunscreen: Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud cover
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SPF 100 twice as good as SPF 50?
No. SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB; SPF 100 blocks 99%. The difference is minimal in practice. The main benefit of SPF 100 is providing a buffer for those who underapply — but it does not double your protection.
Does SPF protect against UVA rays?
SPF only measures UVB protection. Look for “broad spectrum” on the label, which means the sunscreen also protects against UVA rays. Both UVA and UVB cause skin cancer and aging.
Can I mix SPF moisturizer and sunscreen?
No. Mixing dilutes both products. Apply a separate SPF 30+ sunscreen over your moisturizer, or use a dedicated SPF moisturizer with a tested broad-spectrum rating.
